(MRR) Lovely femme-led post-punk/coldwave album from Copenhagen’s KOLD FRONT. The duo presents six songs, only one of which is under four minutes (and just barely), giving plenty of meditative noise-space that turns into a snare-driven fantasy ride. The album’s ominous, reverb-chamber guitar and drum machine theme stands alone in “Interlude,” and despite the general allergic reaction to the instrumental, I think it works here. My favorite track is the closer, “Did You Wish to Die”—it’s dream pop vocals float over their signature, desperate sound, while being slow enough to contemplate the title, which comes as a statement, not a question. If you are looking for something moody to chew on, look no further. Symphony of Destruction bags another keeper

(POSTPUNK.COM) The Völuspá/Vølvens Spådom, translated from the old Norse, is a 13th-century poem from the Poetic Edda detailing Norse cosmogony, the history of gods, men, and monsters from its beginning until the Ragnarök (Doom of the Gods). The narrator in the poem is a “vølvle” (a priestess or oracle) telling, in 65 brief stanzas, of the beginning of time, the structures of human life with the gods and the “jætter”, and the destruction/rebirth of the world.

This ancient Norse prophecy forms the lyrics of SOL by Danish post-punk band Kold Front.

“The imageries of this poem are sometimes as clear as day, sometimes otherworldly, and to us incomprehensible,” says vocalist Stine Holme. “I thought an abstract and sometimes suggestive aesthetic suited the song and the origin of the lyrics.”

During the production process, Holme had left Copenhagen and relocated to the countryside, which proved an obstacle for creating a promo video, so the band went with a creative solution: old-fashioned animation. The resulting stop-motion is a lovely display of sticks arranged in various patterns and formations; bringing to mind ancient runes, rituals, and pagan tree worship. Kold Front formed back in 2015, releasing a split with Copenhagen post-punk band Moth, followed by a Europe tour, and later their first 7” co-released by Danish label Saudade and Symphony of Destruction. After playing at the San La Muerte Festival in 2017, the band decided to part ways, and the trio became a duo, consisting now of Mathias and Stine, who took on the role of doing the electronic elements. The LP is the result of the band finding the core of their sound.

(JEU D’OMBRE) Voici un enregistrement particulièrement intéressant et savoureux si vous voulez mon avis. Ce premier mini-album des danois de Kold Front peut-être vu comme la suite logique d’une discographie déjà bien remplie avec des démos, un split avec Moth (du Danemark également) et quelques singles. Six morceaux pour presque une demie-heure de coldwave aux sonorités synthétiques et gelées. Une très belle offrande hantée par la voix féminine de Stine Holme pleine d’émotions et d’influences Post-Punk. La mayonnaise prend rudement bien. On se rend compte dès « Sol », le premier titre, que la musique de Kold Front est à maturité. Les lignes instrumentales sont détaillées, notamment le duo basse-guitare qui joue sans cesse au chat et à la souris au niveau des harmonisations. C’est un beau travail d’apparence simple mais fourmillant de petits détails savoureux et de bonnes idées bien trouvées.
Certes, le son très spécifique de la boîte à rythmes en rebutera peut-être quelques un·e·s, mais, pour ma part, je considère que c’est un choix esthétique judicieux de la part du duo danois. En effet, cette froideur dans les rythmiques développe un certain sentiment de détachement et de tristesse assez palpable, notamment sur les titres plus lents comme « Interlude », « Boy » ou « Did You Wish To Die » (très belle chanson atmosphérique au passage). Pourtant, le duo ne sombre jamais dans le caricatural ou le ridicule. Sa musique est sincère, cohérente, convaincante. L’atmosphère Post-Punk plus sombre de « En Smag af Jern og Blod » développe une puissance et une intensité bienvenue qui nous fait comprendre que Kold Front est un groupe à prendre au sérieux.
Au niveau du son, les parti-pris sont nombreux et ne plairont pas à tout le monde (et ce n’est certainement pas le but non plus). On ne peut en revanche rien reprocher au niveau formel, tout est audible, bien défini, travaillé.
